How should I administer a chickweed/clover weed killer in conjunction with early spring lawn fertilizer ?
I live in southeastern Michigan on about an acre of land with “country grass”. I’ve lived here for about 5 years and never fertilized or used any weed killers, so my lawn is starting to look a little shabby. The worst is the chickweed that seems to be multiplying in my front yard. It heavily covers an area of about 1000 sq. feet. My goal is to kill the chickweed, while growing a healthier grass with fertilizer. How can I effectively achieve both ???
Since a large portion of your yard is weeds, I recommend a weed and feed combination product such as Scotts® Turf Builder® With PLUS 2® Weed Control. Apply the product before it rains to save yourself some money on the water bill and the headache of watering yourself. I would recommend reading the instructions carefully for the right amount to apply. It sometimes can burn your grass if you apply too much.
If you had a few weeds, you could apply a weed killer before you apply a separate fertilizer.
The Root of it All: Microclover in the lawn?
I’ve been reading about microclover as a component oflawns. Have you heard of anyone using it in our area? Supposedly, the microclover has small unobtrusive leaves, and does not formclumps, but grown throughout the lawn. The idea is greatlyappealing to me. Thanks. – Mike, Racine. Kill Weeds With Vinegar

I really want 20 “lawn mower, so I would not have done so much to go But not that bad of job cuts, which must be at least four parties (two runs from north to south, two to go from east to west) on every square inch of my garden. no difference at all after the first pass, look back and see the routine, but you can not see the difference in height between the uncut grass, which is apparently just cut. and security (the push lawn mower?. really?) on the front doing a great job cutting down tall grass so slip under the mower, never to be reduced.
Not sure if there is a better reel mowers out there, but to save money and avoid this. Scotts would be ashamed to put your name on this.

I don’t understand the complaints about this mower. I have had it for 8 months now, have mowed the lawn many, many times and have had absolutely no problems. I used it immediately after putting it together (I am a woman and it took me less than 30 minutes to assemble). I was mowing our yard in the dark! I never worry about waking neighbors or being annoying because it is so quiet and peaceful to use. I mow with the kids outside, I can hear everything they are doing/saying because it’s so quiet. It’s so easy to use, my 3 year old son can push it. Our yard is very uneven, but this mower cuts the grass evenly and cleanly. I’ve never had a problem with weeds not getting cut. The only thing this mower has not been able to cut easily is the grass that has gone to seed – it’s just too flimsy to stand up. I do overlap quite a bit and make two passes when mowing, one in each direction, but we have a small yard and I can still finish in less than an hour.
I found this to be amazingly easy to put together and use! I’m not a kid (61 year old woman), nor am I particularly athletic, but I found this very satisfying to use. Love the sound. I DO need to get a grass-catcher, though.
This year we decided to cancel the lawn service and do it ourselves – but with a few changes. No more noise and air polution. Gardening is supposed to be a peaceful time with nature, right? No more shaved lawn when the gardeners “forget” to raise the blade to 3″ (the recommended height for St. Augustine). No more bald spots because a heavy gas mower can’t evenly cut the crest of our hill. And no more money flying out of our wallets. Based on what we were paying the service, this mower paid for itself in less than a month. This simple, easy-to-use mower met all our requirements and our lawn has never looked better. We enjoy the fact that we can mow in the early morning or late evening – especially nice in our hot Texas weather. I never thought lawn upkeep could be enjoyable, but with this mower, even our 9-year-old daughter asks to mow the lawn.

It cuts well, jams easily
I have a fairly small yard and can use this to cut the whole thing in under 30min. it cuts well and it is fun to use. it is about as difficult as a motorized push mower. th biggest drawback with this is that it jams very easily. very small twigs can cause it to suddenly stop. i have made it a point to walk around and clear any sticks i see before i start which helps. if you dont have a stick problem like i seem to have and have a small yard, this thing is great. if you are trying to cut up everything that is in your yard, this wont work.
Just to set the stage, I have a relatively level and medium-sized rectangular lawn. Passed on getting a gas powered mower to try a push reel lawn mower and it was totally worth it. Originally chose this model b/c it has a wide cutting surface and the second set of wheels hold the machine up on its own – both key features in my opinion. Very light compared to a gas powered mower (which yes, does pull itself after you start it, but you still have to move it in and out of storage with nothing but muscle power). Cuts very easily as I drove it right through some foot tall grass for the first cut of the spring and it mowed everything down. Only problems were tall weeds or tall crab grass that bent over and did not get cut but that’s more a result of our the lawn of my new home being a collection of some grass, some weeds and lots of crab grass. Any sections that were good grass were mowed right over with a clean crisp cut. Small branches or twigs can jam the machine but you just lean over, take it out and you’re off and running again. The whirring/grinding sound of the reel spinning isn’t exactly whisper quiet so you won’t be mowing your lawn at 5 am without making noise, but I’d guess it’s 1/10th the sound output from a gas powered motor. Did not get the clippings catcher based on the poor reviews (and the fact that the mower is 20″ wide while the catcher is rated for up to 18″ mowers) so I have just been mulching the grass and that has worked out find. Bottom line, it’s not heavy, it’s much cleaner than gas powered mowers, it’s quieter, overall it’s faster and less time consuming (no oil, gas, maintenance to worry about) and it’s good exercise. I would suggest keeping up when cutting and not letting a couple of weeks pass in between cuts but you should be doing that already anyways.
When I started mowing at about 6 or 7 we had a push mower that was the hardest thing in the world to push. When we finally got a power mower, it was heaven. This was 50 years ago. As an adult I’ve mostly had a push mower. Gas mowers pollute both you and the earth. No matter how good. Electric mowers are better until it’s time to pay your electric bill or get a new battery. I’ve had 6 push mowers as an adult and the Scotts is by far the best. I hated my old unnamed push mower. I bought it because it the blade never touched the grass bar and it was supposed to only need sharpening every 8 years. After 3 years watching it beat the grass down or just hearing the gears ratchet without moving the blade, I thought sadly it was time for an electric. Then I read about the Scott online. I ordered one. It took an half hour to assemble and I walked out doors into mower heaven. The grass flowed like beautiful sheaths of wheat out of the back of the Scott, and it was pretty tall to I kept walking into the house saying to my wife, “I love this mower!”
I just loaned it to my neighbor to see how she would like it, and she’s going to buy one.
You do work harder with this than a power mower and I do go over each swath twice, but it’s great exercise. It’s quiet, no fumes, no dust, just a good sweat. It is also better for your lawn. And I’ve used push mowers on even big yards. This is my second year and the blade still cuts great. I LOVE THIS MOWER!
Inhibiting effects of fruits and vegetables on cancer and heart disease
Aim The purpose of this report is to analyse the role of fruits and vegetables in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Introduction
Recent studies have indicated strong relationship between fruit and vegetable consumptions and reduced risk of certain cancers and cardiovascular disease.
A diet high in vegetables and fruits is believed to be associated with reducing the risk of cancer of the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, lung, colon, rectum and some other cancers. However there is no specific reason or evidence to clarify the mechanism and also the results of various researches in the roles of fruit and vegetables do not all agree.
Nutritionists recommend the consumption of a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables per day (except for potatoes and other starchy tubers) for the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity, in addition to the prevention and reduction of several micronutrient deficiencies, especially in less developed countries.
A number of scientific evidences have implied low fruit and vegetable intake is a major risk factor for several non-communicable diseases. Increasing fruit and vegetable intake by as little as one serving per day can have a great influence on heart disease risk.
Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease is related to diseases of the heart and diseases of the blood vessel system (arteries, capillaries, veins) within a person’s entire body, such as the brain, legs, and lungs. “Cardio” refers to the heart and “vascular” refers to the blood vessel system.
Fruits and vegetable intake and its association with the risk of cardiovascular disease According to many studies, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. So it is crucial to control its condition. Diet can be a very important factor for lowering blood pressure. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension study indicated that there is a compelling relationship between diet and blood pressure (cited in Harvard School of Public Health 2005).
This trial analysed the influence on blood pressure of a diet that was significant in fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and that inhibiting the extent of saturated and total fat.The researchers discovered that people with high blood pressure who adhered to this diet, their systolic blood pressure (the upper number of a blood pressure reading) by about 11 mm Hg and their diastolic blood pressure (the lower number) by virtually 6 mm Hg – as much as medications can effect.Furthermore, eating more fruits and vegetables can have a great effect on cholesterol.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Family Heart Study shows that men and women with the highest daily consumption (more than 4 servings a day) have a lower extent of LDL; low density lipoprotein (bad) cholesterol than those with lower consumption.
Cancer
Human body is composed of millions of tiny cells. Most of the cells divide and multiply occasionally; when an old cell is worn out or damaged, a new cell is formed to replace it. Each cell contains genes (made from the DNA).The proteins inside the gene control when the cell is to divide and multiply. If the gene is damaged or modified (probably as a result of making too much or too little protein) the cell becomes abnormal. The abnormal cell can then divide and multiply without knowing the certain time to stop.A tumour is developed when a group of abnormal cells clump together.
There are two types of tumour: benign and malignant. Benign tumours are not carcenogenic and won’t attack or spread to other parts of the body.Malignant tumours are the real cancers. They can grow very fast, attack the adjacent tissues and organs which can result in serious damage. They may even spread to other parts of the body and cause secondary tumours (metastases). However not all cancers create solid tumours- cancers of the blood, such as leukaemia, develop from abnormal blood cells, which then invade other parts of the body by circulating in the bloodstream.
Generally there are about 200 various types of cancer. Some of them are more dangerous than others, some are more readily treated, and others have better survival figures.Unfortunately, many people will be influenced by cancer at some point in lives. If they are diagnosed with cancer, the doctors require to identify what type of cancer they have and if it has spread, so that they can decide on the best period of treatment
Healthy Eating
Eat more fruits and vegetables – can offer an extensive range of vitamins and minerals and fibres required for body. Fruits and vegetables may prevent the risk of cancer probably due to containing anti-oxidant vitamins and minerals helping prevent the cells damage.
Eat more Fiber – is widely present in fruits an vegetables and wholemeal cereals. Some studies approve 20g per day consumption while some others don’t.
Reduce eating fat – The cancer Research UK (2003) discussed that greater fat intake can be related to slight increase of breast cancer. The study has also linked saturated fat and meat intake with slight but considerable increase of the risk.following low consumption, it is most recommended to eat mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats found in vegetables rather than saturated fats.
Cut down on sugar – There is no direct connection between sugar containing foods and breast cancer. However, excessive sugar intake may lead to putting on weight or sometimes contributing to obesity in which case there are some studies suggesting the link between obesity and breast cancer.
Cut down on salt – High salt consumption can result in high blood pressure.
Specific fruits and vegetables
Many researches imply specific fruits and vegetables may protect against certain types of cancer.
Fruits and vegetables contain a number of chemicals, such as the dithiolthiones and glucosinolates from cruciferous vegetables, which are believed to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and cancer occurrence in animals (Warren & Devine 2005).
The Harvard School of Public Health (2005) outlines the following categories of fruits and vegetables offering the most contribution against cardiovascular diseases:
Green leafy vegetables including lettuce, spinach, swiss chard and mustard greens, Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts.
Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit (and their juices) are said to be the most contributing factors against cardiovascular diseases.
It has been reported that broccoli and brussel sprouts and spinach are able to reduce the possibility of breast cancers. This hasn’t been statistically considerable, so reducing the reliability on the results (Warren & Devine 2005). However a number of recently case-control studies have demonstrated inhibiting effect of carrots and spinach as well as species of broccoli (cruciferous) family against breast cancers. Some of these studies have also identified substantial effect of quantity consumed (eating more vegetables result in greater reductions in risk).
Furthermore, there is poor evidence that raw vegetables are likely to be more protective against the progression of breast and other cancers than cooked vegetables. This is probably due to some of the potentially protective chemicals present in vegetables which are damaged by heat process (Warren & Devine 2005)

weeds – how to stop/prevent/slown down on my patio and drive?
Please help I have tried pretty much everything organic and chemical methods
Also are these gas cylinder flame controlled weed killers any good ( I have seen them advertised in Argos)
Thanks for your help
I am currently trying Glyphosate and will let you know how I get on (it takes a few days to start to work)
We had our drive re-done so that it is now one solid slab with a pattern to make it look like flags (of cement, concrete or whatever they use) so that it had no gaps for weeds to grow through. Before that we just had to try and dig the weeds out from the gaps. You could also try filling the gaps with cement after digging out the weeds.
