What are some good breeds of chicken for me to get?

My husband and I currently live in an apartment, but plan to move to a house with a decent amount of property, once I graduate and find a job. We will likely live in a temperate climate, so cold hardy is not a must. We want chickens who can provide eggs, fertilizer, and pest control for a garden. We also want chickens that are friendly and make decent pets. If we get them when they are chicks, we might not know if they are male or female, so knowing that roosters of a particular breed are friendly, is important. We also are not interested in breeds that look too crazy or ridiculous (see picture for example http://www.mypetchicken.com/images/chickenPix/large/Studio_WSilkie_649_L.jpg). We like barred rocks and Road Island reds, but we don’t know anything about other breeds, and I don’t know if barred rock roosters are friendly or not. We plan on having children and would like the chickens to also be pets for them to enjoy.

Buff Orpingtons or Pekin Bantams. Buff Orpingtons are a large and generally friendly type of chicken that will get along with you fantastically well if you raise them from chicks or point of lay. There are many different colours of orpington and the best clours to have are Buff, Black, Blue or White because they have not been mixed much with other breeds of chickens, this is better for their personality. Here is some pictures of them

Blue: http://www.freewebs.com/professorchickenhasmorebreeds/orpingtonhenblue.jpg
White: http://www.pagespoultry.co.uk/images/chickens/white_orpington_hen1.jpg

Pekin Bantams are also good pets, they have the personality of the Orpingtons but they are much, much smaller!

Here is a picture of them,

Ball Plants
My neighbours kid keeps kicking his ball into my garden and trashing my plants, help?

Hi,
My neighbours son is 15, and keeps kicking his ball on purpose into my garden……..he thinks its hilarious, ive told him not to til im blue in the face, but he continues………hes ruined my grass and broken loads of shrubs……we have a park two minutes down the road, and loads of green space nearby…..he just does it to wind me up, help!

If I were you, I’d knock on his door when you know the parents are home and tell them that you’ve had to spray insecticide all over your plants and you’re so worried that their son may become ill because of the ball going through the plants. If this doesn’t help, tell the boy and his family that he and his ball are not welcome in your garden and if he goes into your yard again, you will have to file a police report for him trespassing.

is it safe to use number 2 plastic in fish tanks?

I have been trying to figure out what I can use for a small discreet cave for some of the fish in my tank. I have a plastic bottle from some aquatic plant fertilizer that is now empty. I just want to make sure that putting it into my fish tank will not release chemicals that could harm my fish.

Not sure about that plastic, but the best thing to use for a small cave is terracotta pots. I got some small ones (2.5 inches diameter?) in a three pack at the dollar store the other day, and the snails and corys just adore them… hiding out in there… I sink them partway into my sand substrate and they just love it. :)

How do you cure a burned plant?

I have a science project on fertilizer burn. There are 3 rows of plants with 3 plants each, control, experimental 1, and experimental 2. The control isn’t suppose to get any of the variable, Miracle Gro. The exp. 1 is suppose to get the right amount, exp. 2 suppose to get too much. i accidently put too much Miracle Gro liquid fertilizer on my experimental 1, and now its wilting a little and the tip of the leaves are burned. Please help and tell me how do i fix this! Do i just leave it out in the sun for it to cure? Thanks in advance!

Ooops

Dont worry, just run lukewarm water though the medium for five minutes and they should be ok, although you’ll be left with the incriminating evidence of burnt leaves, so you may want to either change your plant round so your control plants” that you’ve poisoned ” too your number 2′s, that or buy some new plants, and try not to kill the new ones.

Hope this help a little

Do Chemicals in Fireworks/Crackers serve as Fertilizers for Plants?

I had a doubt regarding the fireworks….

Do chemical contents of these any Fireworks/Crackers contain Nitrogen/Phosphorus /Potassium(NPK) elements/oxides which may serve Fertilizers for plants?

Is it safe to put firework chemical powder content in Plants soil?
Thanks for answers

–>And finally tell me whether it is useful or harmful to plants?

The part of fireworks that burn is the ‘gunpowder’ moiety.
Gunpowder is composed of, amongst other chemicals, Carbon and saltpetre ( Potassium Nitrate) & Sulphur. Out of these chemicals the saltpetre (Potassium Nitrate – KNO3) is the most beneficial to a garden as fertiliser, as it contains potassium and nitrogenous material.

What is the effect of high moisture on MOP Fertilizer?

MOP (muriate of potash) is also known as potassium chloride. It is a salt, and therefore water soluble. Excess moisture can start to degrade the chips (granules), and they may stick together. This may result in the formation of lumps, or it may change the bulk density.
