Do you spray your lawn with pesticides and/or herbicides?

Why? What pests do you intend to kill?

Or are you killing the weeds and encouraging grass to grow?

Do you fertrilise your lawn?

Do you hate dandelions? What about daisies and wax-caps?

No, I have a young child and a dog who play on the grass. I don’t want my child’s hands, arms or face exposed to poisons while he tumbles on the lawn. I also don’t want my dog chewing grass that has pesticides or herbicides.

Weeds actually have a great purpose. Plants grow where the conditions are best for those plants to grow and they all contribute to the soil in their own special way.

Dandelions, for example, grow in soil where there is little calcium. They then contribute calcium to the soil, and eventually stop growing at the site, making the soil rich for another type of plant. We should not fight mother nature so much.

Some people pick dandelions and use them for tea or salads. They have many health benefits. We of course can’t eat from a lawn laden with poison.

Pests can be controlled naturally. You can introduce predators by building bird houses, bat houses, or introducing other friendly bugs that control the unwanted pests.

Need weed killer I can use on my lawn.?

I pay a proffesional comany big bucks to care for my lawn, yet thay never seem to get rid of the weeds and I’m tired of calling them every month for a respray. Is there something available over the counter that I can use to kill broadleaf weeds?

What you need is a selective herbicide(many on the market) that kill broad leaf weeds and do not affect grass species
I use a product(Agri Chemical) Versitil
If they are calling every month to re spray they are ripping you off
I normally spray mid/late spring and then fertilise and do it again early autumn and spot spray as necessary during the season

I spray the whole lawn area to ensure I get all the weeds especially those that are not easily visable and about a week later fertilise lawn with a formulated lawn fertiliser
A full spray twice a year is enough

If you want , an airfare and a few beers and I will show you how to do it yourself and save a sh*itload of money. Its not really that difficult, just need an experienced person to show you and you are away laughing(sorry a bit of Kiwi Humour)

How should I administer a chickweed/clover weed killer in conjunction with early spring lawn fertilizer ?

I live in southeastern Michigan on about an acre of land with “country grass”. I’ve lived here for about 5 years and never fertilized or used any weed killers, so my lawn is starting to look a little shabby. The worst is the chickweed that seems to be multiplying in my front yard. It heavily covers an area of about 1000 sq. feet. My goal is to kill the chickweed, while growing a healthier grass with fertilizer. How can I effectively achieve both ???

Since a large portion of your yard is weeds, I recommend a weed and feed combination product such as Scotts® Turf Builder® With PLUS 2® Weed Control. Apply the product before it rains to save yourself some money on the water bill and the headache of watering yourself. I would recommend reading the instructions carefully for the right amount to apply. It sometimes can burn your grass if you apply too much.

If you had a few weeds, you could apply a weed killer before you apply a separate fertilizer.

Good luck!

Does anyone know what color the weed killer Roundup is? And if it is toxic to dogs?

Our landscaper sprayed something and I need to know what it is, our dog has been sick and we took to the vet and got meds but he wanted me to find out what it was that was sprayed, our landscaper says it is roundup and non toxic… But our vet is thinking it is not Roundup.
We definitely do not trust the landscaper. We rent and the rental company has him come in and do the lawn. Also this is definitely not clear that he is spraying, it is bright bluish/green/turquoise color.

Roundup is clear. And yes it is toxic to ALL life forms, plant (haha) or animal. Be careful how you use it.

Please do read the manufactures directions/ cautions.

safe for animal dandelion killer?

My yard is being taken over by dandelions but I have 2 outside cats and 2 little dogs that go out frequently. Are there any commercial weed sprays that will kill the dandelion but not my pets.

Pull by hand or use a garden tool, then pour boiling water over the area. The hot water will kill the remaining roots and there’s no chemicals to worry about.

will non toxic weed killers harm chickens?

i have 4 chickens in my backyard and my dad wants to kno if u use non toxic weed killers such as vinegar, will they be harmful to the chickens? because they do eat alot of grass

You could pull the weeds and put them in the chicken’s coop — they would eat them! That’s how we kill weeds at our house.

Vinegar would probably be offensive-smelling to chickens and they’d just avoid it.

Also try pouring boiling water on anthills and weeds.

Try calling your county extension service (link below if you don’t know yours) and asking them if a particular substance is harmful to poultry. If your dad is an “organic” gardener, you’re probably going to be OK!
