All About Organic Garden Fertilizer

Fertilizers help to create a green environment, but apparently the most widely used are chemical or synthetic fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers have a lot of drawbacks, which has necessitated the use of organic garden fertilizer. These fertilizers release nutrients in a slow pace. They let out nitrogen which is in turn utilised by the soil microbes, which help in keeping the soil healthy. On contrast, synthetic fertilizers only add concentrated nutrients for the plants but nothing to the soil itself. Every natural fertilizer contains trace elements, which plants need in minute quantities, and major nutrients, which are needed in larger amounts. The major nutrients are potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen.

The following are the various types of organic garden fertilizer

Compost – Compost is the natural break-down of organic material into dark, rich soil. It is also called humus. While equivalent to a mere 1-1-1 fertilizer, it acts as a conditioner, retaining water, breaking up clay and adding valuable microorganisms and nematodes, all vital to soil health. The humid acid in the compost will release natural nutrients already in the soil, so the apparent low-nutrient value is made up for its powerful soil-amending properties.

Mulch – Mulch is a protective layer of material placed atop soils. Natural mulches are used to help retain moisture, keep the soil at a more even temperature, and provide shade and a cover to repel weed growth. As the mulch decomposes, it adds nutrients to the soil.

Composted manure – Manures are high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and the levels are different for horse, cow, sheep, chicken and vegetable-based “green” manures. Until the advent of chemical fertilizer, they were the primary fertilizer on farmlands, and are still in wide use today. Composted manures do not have this run-off problem. The composting process lowers the amount of nitrogen and locks the remainder into stable compounds. The high heat generated by composting also kills any weed seeds and pathogens.

Other Organic fertilizers include:

Bone meal – It is a good source of phosphorous and calcium, which makes up between 2% and 5% of the total composition. Bone meal is often used for tomatoes and bulbs.

Cottonseed meal – A good organic source of nitrogen and trace elements, it has an acidic pH and is often an ingredient in all-purpose natural fertilizers.

Fish meal – A natural fertilizer made in meal form that is high in nitrogen and phosphorous.
Soybean meal – Made from soybeans and is used primarily as a source of nitrogen or as a soil amendment.

Salts – Used to treat soils and plants deficient in magnesium and sulfur. Because of its high salt content it should not be used on soils that are already high in salt.

Gypsum – Also known as calcium sulfate, it is a good source of calcium and sulfur. It is an inexpensive material to use for neutralizing acidic soils, and it also helps to break up heavy clay soils so air and water can penetrate.

Home Living Garden Guide to Dealing With Those Pesky Weeds

This might seem hard to believe, but to some folk weeds are seen as being quite attractive to their garden. Weeds such dandelions, daisies and buttercups can look very humble and innocent. Don’t be fooled! Without a moments notice these weeds can take over your entire garden, smothering your the plants that you want to be growing in your outdoor living space.

Time to take control and kick mother nature’s ass!

Before I go any further, I must point out that I am not recommending using any chemicals or toxic weed killers. We just want to kill the weeds in our garden, not killing our environment, that would be kicking mother nature’s ass a bit too hard.

Weeds can be controlled both before and after they emerge from the ground. The most effective way of dealing with weeds that have emerged is using a bit of old fashioned elbow grease. Get down your knees and with a long handle tool with sharp prongs, grip the weeds and yank them right out from the ground, making sure you’ve taken out the root of your victim or else they will grow back. I know it will involve quite a lot of effort on your part and granted it may be not the best way to spend your weekends or days off, but this kind of manual labour is far more effective than spraying some weed killer down and waiting to see if takes effect. Believe me you’ll thank yourself later.

One last tip, keep your lawn fertilised as without the proper nutrients in the soil your grass won’t grow as it should and instead sprout big ugly deep rooted weeds…not good.

Once all this done, go out to your garden, sit back, relax and admire the work you’ve done. Well done!

What are some good breeds of chicken for me to get?

My husband and I currently live in an apartment, but plan to move to a house with a decent amount of property, once I graduate and find a job. We will likely live in a temperate climate, so cold hardy is not a must. We want chickens who can provide eggs, fertilizer, and pest control for a garden. We also want chickens that are friendly and make decent pets. If we get them when they are chicks, we might not know if they are male or female, so knowing that roosters of a particular breed are friendly, is important. We also are not interested in breeds that look too crazy or ridiculous (see picture for example http://www.mypetchicken.com/images/chickenPix/large/Studio_WSilkie_649_L.jpg). We like barred rocks and Road Island reds, but we don’t know anything about other breeds, and I don’t know if barred rock roosters are friendly or not. We plan on having children and would like the chickens to also be pets for them to enjoy.

Buff Orpingtons or Pekin Bantams. Buff Orpingtons are a large and generally friendly type of chicken that will get along with you fantastically well if you raise them from chicks or point of lay. There are many different colours of orpington and the best clours to have are Buff, Black, Blue or White because they have not been mixed much with other breeds of chickens, this is better for their personality. Here is some pictures of them

Black: http://freespace.virgin.net/hillcroft.chickens/quartet_Buff_Orpington.jpg
Blue: http://www.freewebs.com/professorchickenhasmorebreeds/orpingtonhenblue.jpg
White: http://www.pagespoultry.co.uk/images/chickens/white_orpington_hen1.jpg

Pekin Bantams are also good pets, they have the personality of the Orpingtons but they are much, much smaller!

Here is a picture of them,

On the other hand, you can also find some very expensive compost bin that do a great job of creating good compost, and doing it quickly with just a minimum effort required. what in bloom buster fertilizer should you avoid?

i bought a bloom buster and read the ingredient on the back and it says its made with urea. urea is pee from animals and contains lots of acid so what i wonder is this actually bad because when a dog pees on grass it dies or is it just an overload of urea?
ok nitrogen is for vegetation, phosphorous is for flowering and fruiting and potash is for healthy thick roots. just in case people say things and don’t know what they are talking about.

The manufacturers cannot afford for you to damage your plants with their product, so follow the directions on the packaging and you will be OK.
Urea is used for its nitrogen content, which encourages strong growth. If you want fertiliser to encourage good flowers and fruits use tomato fertiliser, which is high in potash.

NB phosphate is actually for roots, potash for flowers.

Root Watering

10 Common Myths About Water Debunked

1) After you use water, it’s gone forever.

After water is used, it’s actually recycled over, and over, and over again. Water is very resilient and responds well to treatments. Buy using water from contaminated streams, lakes, and wells it is a completely different story. To keep our drinking water safe, it must receive regular treatment and have appropriate source protection.

2) Using a water treatment device or filter will make tap water healthier.

Thousands of people use home water filters to improve the smell, taste, or appearance of their tap water, but it does not necessarily make the water healthier or safer. Unless you have a well with contaminated water, the water that comes out of your kitchen sink is as nutritious as water gets.

3) Drinking coffee or tea will keep you hydrated.

Most of us think that since beverages are made up mostly of water that they will keep us hydrated. In many cases, the exact opposite is true. Many beverages are solutes (meaning they contain dissolved solid materials) and some are diuretics (which may even dehydrate your body).

4) Eight glasses a day is the right amount of water for everyone.

The amount of water you should drink depends on your size, activity level, and age in addition to other factors such as your diet and stress level. A 100 lb female living in a temperature-controlled environment will obviously not require as much water as a 215 lb male doing vigorous physical activity in 100 degree whether.

5) Drinking water can never cause health problems.

If you drink too much water you can suffer from water poisoning, which can even result in death. Last year, there was a widely reported incident where a Sacramento, CA resident died after drinking mass amounts of water for a radio competition.

6) There are no federal restrictions on bottled water.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under federal law, companies must test bottled water for the same 80-some contaminants as municipal water.

7) If you don’t like water just drink soda.

Water is by far the best hydration fluid. Soda does not even compare. An 8-ounce sugar-based cola has about 95 calories. The sugar in soda will even rot your teeth. Regardless, rinsing your mouth with a glass of water after any sugary drink can actually help protect against cavities.

8) Lots of water is the only way to maintain green grass.

During the summer, your lawn needs about an inch of water per week. Too much water can actually kill a lawn. Roots need a period of dryness in order to remain healthy.

9) Drinking water before a meal can help you lose weight.

The water you drink before or during a meal won’t keep you from overeating. The only way water will help you feel full is if the water is found in foods like fruits and vegetables.

10) It’s impossible to get dehydrated while swimming.

You’re actually more likely to become dehydrated when you spend time in a water source such as a pool or the ocean. Why? Thirst is controlled by the volume of blood at the center of your body.

Ball Plants
My neighbours kid keeps kicking his ball into my garden and trashing my plants, help?

Hi,
My neighbours son is 15, and keeps kicking his ball on purpose into my garden……..he thinks its hilarious, ive told him not to til im blue in the face, but he continues………hes ruined my grass and broken loads of shrubs……we have a park two minutes down the road, and loads of green space nearby…..he just does it to wind me up, help!

If I were you, I’d knock on his door when you know the parents are home and tell them that you’ve had to spray insecticide all over your plants and you’re so worried that their son may become ill because of the ball going through the plants. If this doesn’t help, tell the boy and his family that he and his ball are not welcome in your garden and if he goes into your yard again, you will have to file a police report for him trespassing.

how to use Turf Builder and Lawn Fertilizer?

I just bought a first single house and the lawn is drying out. Previous seller left us with Scott Fertilizer and Turf Builder. How should I use either one of those to help reviving the lawn?? I tried to read the back of those product but still doesn’t find clear direction.

Scott’s Turf Builder makes your grass green while it also strengthens the roots from below. It does not kill weeds in your lawn.
1st – If you have weeds in your lawn, use Scott’s Bonus S. You can also use the Turf Builder and mix the 2 together. If you do not have weeds and you just want to get your grass back in shape. Here’s the solution:
When your grass is dry, depending on how big your yard is, you can use a spreader or not. Start by walking the spreader in one direction from east to west and then going north to south or vice verse. Just as long as you cover the whole area. Your are trying to get an even coverage on your lawn. Once this is done, then water it in for 30 minutes. You will notice a difference in 2 weeks. After the 6 weeks, re-apply. What this does: It makes the grass greener and healthier, roots stronger. After applying the 2nd time, if you still want to keep the grass green and healthy, you can also use Milorganite which is 1/3 off the cost and does the same thing. There is a number on the back of these bags by law, you can call them up, the first question they will ask is for your zip code and then you explain what you are trying to accomplish. Good Luck and Have a New Healthy Lawn!
