What are some good breeds of chicken for me to get?

My husband and I currently live in an apartment, but plan to move to a house with a decent amount of property, once I graduate and find a job. We will likely live in a temperate climate, so cold hardy is not a must. We want chickens who can provide eggs, fertilizer, and pest control for a garden. We also want chickens that are friendly and make decent pets. If we get them when they are chicks, we might not know if they are male or female, so knowing that roosters of a particular breed are friendly, is important. We also are not interested in breeds that look too crazy or ridiculous (see picture for example http://www.mypetchicken.com/images/chickenPix/large/Studio_WSilkie_649_L.jpg). We like barred rocks and Road Island reds, but we don’t know anything about other breeds, and I don’t know if barred rock roosters are friendly or not. We plan on having children and would like the chickens to also be pets for them to enjoy.

Buff Orpingtons or Pekin Bantams. Buff Orpingtons are a large and generally friendly type of chicken that will get along with you fantastically well if you raise them from chicks or point of lay. There are many different colours of orpington and the best clours to have are Buff, Black, Blue or White because they have not been mixed much with other breeds of chickens, this is better for their personality. Here is some pictures of them

Pekin Bantams are also good pets, they have the personality of the Orpingtons but they are much, much smaller!

Here is a picture of them,

10 Common Myths About Water Debunked

1) After you use water, it’s gone forever.

After water is used, it’s actually recycled over, and over, and over again. Water is very resilient and responds well to treatments. Buy using water from contaminated streams, lakes, and wells it is a completely different story. To keep our drinking water safe, it must receive regular treatment and have appropriate source protection.

2) Using a water treatment device or filter will make tap water healthier.

Thousands of people use home water filters to improve the smell, taste, or appearance of their tap water, but it does not necessarily make the water healthier or safer. Unless you have a well with contaminated water, the water that comes out of your kitchen sink is as nutritious as water gets.

3) Drinking coffee or tea will keep you hydrated.

Most of us think that since beverages are made up mostly of water that they will keep us hydrated. In many cases, the exact opposite is true. Many beverages are solutes (meaning they contain dissolved solid materials) and some are diuretics (which may even dehydrate your body).

4) Eight glasses a day is the right amount of water for everyone.

The amount of water you should drink depends on your size, activity level, and age in addition to other factors such as your diet and stress level. A 100 lb female living in a temperature-controlled environment will obviously not require as much water as a 215 lb male doing vigorous physical activity in 100 degree whether.

5) Drinking water can never cause health problems.

If you drink too much water you can suffer from water poisoning, which can even result in death. Last year, there was a widely reported incident where a Sacramento, CA resident died after drinking mass amounts of water for a radio competition.

6) There are no federal restrictions on bottled water.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), under federal law, companies must test bottled water for the same 80-some contaminants as municipal water.

7) If you don’t like water just drink soda.

Water is by far the best hydration fluid. Soda does not even compare. An 8-ounce sugar-based cola has about 95 calories. The sugar in soda will even rot your teeth. Regardless, rinsing your mouth with a glass of water after any sugary drink can actually help protect against cavities.

8) Lots of water is the only way to maintain green grass.

During the summer, your lawn needs about an inch of water per week. Too much water can actually kill a lawn. Roots need a period of dryness in order to remain healthy.

9) Drinking water before a meal can help you lose weight.

The water you drink before or during a meal won’t keep you from overeating. The only way water will help you feel full is if the water is found in foods like fruits and vegetables.

10) It’s impossible to get dehydrated while swimming.

You’re actually more likely to become dehydrated when you spend time in a water source such as a pool or the ocean. Why? Thirst is controlled by the volume of blood at the center of your body.

Is it okay to use miracle gro on a juniper bonsai?

Its time to fertilize my juniper bonsai and I cant find any bonsai tree fertilizer locally, is it okay to use miracle gro house plant food on it instead? I read online that it was okay as long as its diluted to half strength, but I don’t want to kill it on accident.

Your information is correct. You can use Miracle Gro as long as it is diluted to half strength. Make sure it is water soluble and that you only fertilize after watering, or it will do no good. Lawn soil-test results; chemistry?

Heard back from the state lab. I took 12 cores, 7″ deep. Lawn varies in quality in places. Didn’t have a probe; used a tent pole, hammered it in, withdrew it, and shook out the soil by banging the pole with a hammer and loosening the soil out with a screwdriver.

Results say 6.3 pH; potassium 80 ppm (“high”); organic matter 1.9 %; phosphorus off their chart–37 ppm (higher than “high”).

They say don’t lime; focus on 4 fertilizations/year, all general high-N (1 lb/1,000 sq. ft.) (no-phosphorus if possible).

1) I plan to core-aerate soon, then overseed, then fertilize, then add peat. Should I use starter fertilizer as first planned (high-P), or now just general fertilizer? Will seed results still be OK with general?

2) Did the high-phosphorus results have anything to do with the old aluminum tent pole I used to get the cores? Some metal residue?

Soil tends to be red sand after 2″ down (glacial hill); heavy oak leaves in fall; upper Midwest.

Thanks.

Took me a while to dig your questions out, you answered a few of your own. 1) Stay with the general, the seed will be fine. 2)The tent pole was quick thinking, good job. The only result that could even be remotely affected by a residue would be manganese, iron or magnesium, never phosphorus. RScott

organic lawn service
I live in The Colony and I am looking for a lawn care service in my area that will be strictly organic.?

I want a company that will do everything except the watering. My lawn has not been treated in 3 years so I am ready for organics. Anybody know any companies like this in my area?

There are not many that are truly 100% organic since the Texas soil, climate, and especially pests, do not respond well to less than a full biochemical assault. If you really want to have totally green greens, then the traditional method is DIY pulling weeds by hand and spreading the traditional Texas organic fertilizer on the lawn and plants. Cow manure is available at just about all of the lawn and garden centers in the area and doesn’t smell too bad after a couple of days. Just be sure there is no runoff as that is usually prohibited. Just remember that citrus is native to FL and CA and the Valley, but not North Texas so should not be used for a real organic yard. Petroleum is a natural substance too, but you wouldn’t call that or it derivatives organic. Good luck on a very politically correct goal.

Realizing The Beauty Of Spring Through Winter Lawn Care

A basic way to make sure your lawn is substantial as well as healthy each spring is to provide it with the proper lawn care throughout the months of winter and in late fall. While most lawns appear altogether hibernating throughout these months, the way that the lawn is cared for during this time period can make a lot of difference to the overall beauty and health of it when the summer time arrives. Here are a few ideas that will assure that the lawn is as healthy as it can possibly be when warm weather eventually returns.

Clearing Debris

If you happen to live in a region where there is regular snowfall, you want to be certain your strategy includes seeing to it that all parts of the lawn are free of debris as well as clutter prior to the first large snowfall of the year happens. Good maintenance of your lawn and preparation for winter snow include raking the leaves, getting rid of sticks, and removing any other kind of debris that simply does not belong on your lawns.

Even if you do not expect a lot of snow, it is always important to make sure the grass is not left under a pile of leaves or other waste which can interfere with the grass receiving a higher rate of moisture, air and nutrients. While the growth of most grass frequently stops at the end of autumn, it still has the capability of dying if it is buried under any type of yard debris.

Controlling Weeds

There are numerous individuals that have the misconception that the summer season is the most significant time period to control weeds. However, just the opposite is true and it is significant to realize this in order to plan for appropriate and healthy lawn care for the lawns that are around your home and garden.

Weeds actually grow much quicker than your lawn did during the winter, as compared to the summer season. If weeds are allowed to merely grow out of control during the “off season”, then there might not be a lot of lawn left to enjoy when spring comes.

Fortunately, since your grass will be growing at a much slower rate during the fall and winter, it is fairly easy to pinpoint the progress of weeds during this time period. Just make certain that you give a little attention and care to your lawn during these particular months, and get the weeds pulled out, or apply herbicide, so these weeds do not smother the lawn and ruin the appearance of your designed landscape.

Rye Grass and Bluegrass

If you are happy with the look of a thick flourishing lawn through the wintertime, then it is a good idea to plant ryegrass, bluegrass or other types of northern grasses which all have a tendency to be heartier and will survive through the cold winter months.

One of the primary benefits when using rye grass in your lawn, is that it generally grows well when mixed with your current grass and it will make your lawn appear more lush and full. However, the ryegrass will actually die off and the lawns regular grass will then take over as it comes to life in the springtime.

The winter grasses such as rye, will tend to grow better if you plant them in mid and later part of October. If you decide to plant in the fall, you will still need to make sure that your new lawn receives sufficient amounts of water.

If you get a week of dry weather, you want to make sure you water your lawn so that the rye gets one to two inches of water per week. Just by taking a few simple measures of lawn care should help you achieve a healthy and lush lawn that stand out in the summer.
