Organic movement grows in Ozone Park
CSA Ozone Park is working to bring organic, locally grown produce to consumers in south Queens. By now, Americans have become so familiar with terms like“genetically modified foods” and “frankenfoods” that, for some, a trip to the grocery store is about as pleasurable as warfare. Super Tomato Maker Amazing Tomato Fertilizer
I have been trying to figure out what I can use for a small discreet cave for some of the fish in my tank. I have a plastic bottle from some aquatic plant fertilizer that is now empty. I just want to make sure that putting it into my fish tank will not release chemicals that could harm my fish.
Not sure about that plastic, but the best thing to use for a small cave is terracotta pots. I got some small ones (2.5 inches diameter?) in a three pack at the dollar store the other day, and the snails and corys just adore them… hiding out in there… I sink them partway into my sand substrate and they just love it.
Lake Aeration and Pond Airation To Manage Aquatic Plants and Weeds
I just bought a first single house and the lawn is drying out. Previous seller left us with Scott Fertilizer and Turf Builder. How should I use either one of those to help reviving the lawn?? I tried to read the back of those product but still doesn’t find clear direction.
Scott’s Turf Builder makes your grass green while it also strengthens the roots from below. It does not kill weeds in your lawn.
1st – If you have weeds in your lawn, use Scott’s Bonus S. You can also use the Turf Builder and mix the 2 together. If you do not have weeds and you just want to get your grass back in shape. Here’s the solution:
When your grass is dry, depending on how big your yard is, you can use a spreader or not. Start by walking the spreader in one direction from east to west and then going north to south or vice verse. Just as long as you cover the whole area. Your are trying to get an even coverage on your lawn. Once this is done, then water it in for 30 minutes. You will notice a difference in 2 weeks. After the 6 weeks, re-apply. What this does: It makes the grass greener and healthier, roots stronger. After applying the 2nd time, if you still want to keep the grass green and healthy, you can also use Milorganite which is 1/3 off the cost and does the same thing. There is a number on the back of these bags by law, you can call them up, the first question they will ask is for your zip code and then you explain what you are trying to accomplish. Good Luck and Have a New Healthy Lawn!
Welll i have around a 40 g tank in my room. And i planted some lucky bamboo in it…Will it be toxic to my fish?i had the bamboo for a year now….or 2 not sure…So i didnt put fertilizer in it
I don’t think it will bother your fish unless it becomes waterlogged and dies. this would cause your ammonia levels to rise. If you have had it in your tank for that long than you are most likely caring for it properly and should be fine.
what are the harmfull effects of nitrogen fertilizer on the environment?
could you give me some sitesor something telling hte harmfull effects of nitrogen fertilizer on the enviroment
First kitkat is incorrect about not being able to make fertilizers without nitrogen. There are also potassium and phosphorous based fertilizers among the synthetic fertilizers.
What too much fertilizer does is get into the water and cause dead zones by encouraging certain algae to grow out of control and use up all the oxygen.
There is a huge dead zone out in the Gulf of Mexico at the Mississippi Delta as well as others around the planet.
Would you like to increase your yield by 25%? Well, we know how! Fertilizers are used to improve the yield from crops. It can be applied either from the root or through the leaves. Seaweed fertilizers have been known to improve the quality and produce of your plants. Did you know by using such fertilizers, you get rich fruits and vegetables high in nutrients. How? It starts at the foundation- the root. By expanding the root system and with improved seed germination, plants get healthier and stronger. Thus they are able to combat disease and pests such as red spider mite and aphids.
Common liquid seaweed fertilizer is normally used as a foliar spray. Extracted from seaweed, this fertilizer increases the produce when seeds are soaked in it for a while. Statistics has revealed that rice, black gram and green gram harvests increased significantly after using the substance. In order to use this brand, 100ml of MBP-liquid fertilizer has to be diluted in one liter of water. It can then be sprayed onto the plants.
Granular organic seaweed fertilizer contains micronutrients such as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium and many more, which are essential for the healthy growth of plants. The presence of these micronutrients retains moisture, keeps the plants aerated and increases the formation of humas. By stimulating the root system, plants are able to breathe easily. To apply this fertilizer you can add 25 to 30 kg directly to the soil.
Dried seaweed powder is another form of seaweed fertilizer where the salt from the seaweed is removed, and then it is dried and powdered. Like in the case of organic seaweed fertilizer, this can be applied directly to the soil. Results have shown that the soil improves in quality, becomes soft and porous. By improving the enzymatic activity it increases crop productivity. You can spread about 30 kg of the powder to one acre of land and then plow it to get more value out of it.
Neptune Harvest has come out with an Organic Fish/Seaweed Blend Fertilizer, which has increased the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. After using this brand, results have shown that flowers are more fragrant and do not fade away quickly. Goji Berries Inc has created a seaweed fertilizer by extracting seaweed found in Nova Scotia in the Atlantic. It is said to possess more than sixty micronutrients perfect for growing Goji plants. It is important that seaweed is selected properly and processed under strict quality standards. If this is not done the seaweed will lack in basic nutrients and thus affect the quality of the crop.
By applying the fertilizer in a correct manner, you can expect to get better germination of seeds, healthier leaves and stems, longer period for fruition, and over all strength to combat diseases and dangerous pests. In recent years seaweed fertilizer manufacturers have been found in China, Southeast Asia, South Korea, North Korea and Japan. Today there are about ten manufacturers who sell quality fertilizers, which have brought forth good results. Therefore, you have a wide choice to choose from in order to give your plants added life.

Rain triggers pests, diseases
Garden problems related to wet weather and soggy soil continue. Slugs, earwigs, mushrooms and other fungi and lawn diseases are prevalent. Slugs have plagued petunias in my backyard, although the numbers and damage have dropped after the plants were treated with a slug bait containing iron phosphate. Pupuk ( Part 04 ): Pupuk Formula
Heard back from the state lab. I took 12 cores, 7″ deep. Lawn varies in quality in places. Didn’t have a probe; used a tent pole, hammered it in, withdrew it, and shook out the soil by banging the pole with a hammer and loosening the soil out with a screwdriver.
Results say 6.3 pH; potassium 80 ppm (“high”); organic matter 1.9 %; phosphorus off their chart–37 ppm (higher than “high”).
They say don’t lime; focus on 4 fertilizations/year, all general high-N (1 lb/1,000 sq. ft.) (no-phosphorus if possible).
1) I plan to core-aerate soon, then overseed, then fertilize, then add peat. Should I use starter fertilizer as first planned (high-P), or now just general fertilizer? Will seed results still be OK with general?
2) Did the high-phosphorus results have anything to do with the old aluminum tent pole I used to get the cores? Some metal residue?
Soil tends to be red sand after 2″ down (glacial hill); heavy oak leaves in fall; upper Midwest.
Thanks.
Took me a while to dig your questions out, you answered a few of your own. 1) Stay with the general, the seed will be fine. 2)The tent pole was quick thinking, good job. The only result that could even be remotely affected by a residue would be manganese, iron or magnesium, never phosphorus. RScott
Sable Chemicals optimistic of high output
THE country’s sole producer of ammonia nitrate fertilizer, Sable Chemicals, has set its sights on raising plant capacity from the current 40 percent to over 50 percent of design capacity by the end of the year. How to Test if Fertilizer Has Nitrates in it
Do Chemicals in Fireworks/Crackers serve as Fertilizers for Plants?
I had a doubt regarding the fireworks….
Do chemical contents of these any Fireworks/Crackers contain Nitrogen/Phosphorus /Potassium(NPK) elements/oxides which may serve Fertilizers for plants?
Is it safe to put firework chemical powder content in Plants soil?
Thanks for answers
–>And finally tell me whether it is useful or harmful to plants?
The part of fireworks that burn is the ‘gunpowder’ moiety.
Gunpowder is composed of, amongst other chemicals, Carbon and saltpetre ( Potassium Nitrate) & Sulphur. Out of these chemicals the saltpetre (Potassium Nitrate – KNO3) is the most beneficial to a garden as fertiliser, as it contains potassium and nitrogenous material.
