If you have an asphalt based driveway sealer than it is important to seal it every three or four years.  If you don’t you run the risk of water seeping into cracks and causing damage.  When you see a pot hole in an asphalt roadway this is exactly what has occurred.  Water seeped into the asphalt layer and caused failure.

This can happen in two ways, first, if you live in a northern climate where it freezes the water can actually turn into ice and expand.  When this happens it forces the crack open even wider.  This starts a domino effect where by the crack gets wider so more water enters and freezes making the crack wider again.

The second problem can occur whether you ever have freezing weather or not.  When the water seeps through the crack is will liquefy the substrate under the asphalt layer. This removes the benefit that this hard packed layer of gravel provides to keep the asphalt firm.  As cars drive over this spot they cause the asphalt cement bond with the aggregate (gravel in the mixture) to fail and thus you have a pot hole again.

Driveway Sealer Choices

For years, the best driveway sealer was coal tar.  This is a by product of the manufacture of coke which is used for making steel.  Coal, under heat and pressure, is converted to a more dense energy source and a liquefied hydrocarbon is left as a waste product.  This is coal tar. 

Coal tar works very well as a sealer because it is sticky and bonds with the existing surface.  The problem is, coal tar has a very high VOC (volatile Organic compound) rating.  These are the gases that are given off when the tar cures.  These are very dangerous and have been linked to cancer and respiratory problems.  Consequently, this product has been banned in many municipalities.

The next best driveway sealer is an asphalt emulsion.  It is much safer than coal tar but it does not last as long when applied.  Since the asphalt is emulsified in water, the water is what evaporates which means there are no VOC’s to gas off.  Since coal tar is no longer available this will probably be what you will need to use.

There is a third option that is just now coming on the market.  Latex based sealers are now being sold in many big box home improvement stores.  These products seem promising but they haven’t really been around long enough to really determine their longevity.

Is green green Plant fertilizer a good source for plants?

I have recently bought a box containing 10 small 32ml. bottles of green green plant fertilizer. it is made up of mostly nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potassium. it has a .005% total nitrogen, .003% Ammoniacal Nitrogen, .002% NItrate Nitrogen, .01% Availbable Phosphate, and .02%soluble Potash. my question is this; is this a good fertilizer or should i try something else? i am new at growing plants. any awnser would be much apprectiated!

This is a good plant fertilizer. Be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle exactly, you could kill your plants by over fertilizing them.

Is factory farm’s meat harmful for our body?

there arent any risks to your health, but the animals themselves spend their whole lives indoors under artificial lights getting fattened up for slaughter. if your going to kill them at least let them have a decent life beforehand.

Bamboo in my goldfish tank?

Welll i have around a 40 g tank in my room.And i planted some lucky bamboo in it…Will it be toxic to my fish?i had the bamboo for a year now….or 2 not sure…So i didnt put fertilizer in it

I don’t think it will bother your fish unless it becomes waterlogged and dies. this would cause your ammonia levels to rise. If you have had it in your tank for that long than you are most likely caring for it properly and should be fine.

Will oak tree leaves kill grass?

Someone I work with told me that if you leave oak leaves on the ground or mulch them and they are absorbed by the soil that it is toxic to the grass and the grass will not grow as good around the tree. Is there any truth to this. I have a few pin oaks in my yard and the grass around them could be better. Didn’t know if this is why or if it’s the shade or spotty fertilizer?

If you just leave them on the ground they will block the light and kill the grass.
If you mulch them, they might slightly acidify the soil, so a bit of lime
might be required to turn them into good fertilizer.

Water and fertilizer takes forever to absorb in my lawn. What can I do about this?

It sounds as if you have a drainage issue. Whilst the absolute way to clear this would be to dig your lawn up and install a drainage system, potentially involving pipes etc, there are other things that you can do that are less drastic.

As has been mentioned, aeration done at least annually, will improve surface drainage, and you can assist this by brushing in some sharp grit into the holes that you create. These holes and grit will help improve the amount of air around your grass roots, which will leave your lawn stronger and healthier.

You could also look at drainage around the edges of your lawns, perhaps lowering the soil a little, so that there is improved run-off away from lawn – you could also help with run-off channels, that will help some of the water to soak away – obviously working with, rather than against, any natural gradients.

As a temporary solution, you could dig a trench, that would collect a lot of water, potentially removing this by pumping, or hard graft lifting out by buckets etc. I’m guessing that the water table right now is also fairly high, such that water levels may only be slightly lower than the surface. There’s little that can be done, in this case, apart from getting rid of some of the underlying water, which could be hard work, as you’re partly going against natural systems. If your lawn is situated at a a very low level, then water will continue to drain in its direction, so improved drainage is the only longer term solution.

Otherwise, mow and remove any clippings always, and clear thatch on a regular basis, as this will absorb water at surface level and keep it lying around for longer.

Prolonged programmes that aerate and add drainage material do help with improving overall drainage. It’s usually impractical to completely dig up and replace the underlying poorly draining surface, but a perfectionist may seek that as a solution, if they have plenty of time and money of course.
