Crystal Plant
What do you call the cells w/c act as repositories for plant crystals?

Raphide crystals are formed as bundles of needles in specialized cells in most regions of a plant: in roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits. Raphide idioblast cells contain raphide crystals in monocot plants like Monstera deliciosa’s aerial roots or in the palm family Palmaceae. Idioblast cells differ from their surrounding, fairly homogeneous, tissue. They differ in form, size, content, & cell wall structure from the neighboring cells.

Right and Wrong Corn Growing Methods – And Little Pointers to Help You Along

Winter is the time to prepare the area where your corn will be planted. This is the time to till the soil and add compost to the dirt. A few weeks before you plant the crop you may add fertilizer to the soil as well. Something to keep in mind is the area should not be exposed to strong winds or soil with poor drainage. In addition, you want to choose a location with plenty of direct sunlight.

Growing corn from seeds:

Many gardeners recommend the seeds soak in water for 24 hours to get a jump-start on the sprouting process. After the seeds have soaked for a day, you should place them directly in the gardening soil. Why? Simply put, corn is vegetable that is hard to transplant as a seedling. When growing corn it is helpful to arrange them in rectangle of 4 rows. You want to keep the rows about one foot apart from one-another.

There may be times when the roots appear above ground. To protect them from drying out other damage add a layer of gardening soil or compost over them. Corn is a plant that will need support as it grows. You can provide their support needs by using garden stakes.

Harvesting the vegetable:

The best way to find out if the corn is ripe is to look at the silks at the top of the plant, as they will turn a dark. At this point pull back the husk and squeeze on kernel of corn. A ripe kernel will release a creamy liquid, while unripe one will release a liquid that looks like water.

fertilizer research
What is the best site to research plants for sunlight, soil, water needs, etc. I live in SF Bay area. Thanks.?

Looking for a layman’s (non-botanical terms) information regarding best choices for my garden… want to match soil, water conditions, fertilizer needs, hardiness, etc.. along with the colors.. If it is pertinent, I live in the South Bay part of san Francisco region in US.

I think you will find this site really valuable:

http://www.parentspress.com/ffgardenresources.html

It offers a lot of links and is devoted to gardening in the Bay area. I also like using plant catalogs for information and think the catalogs for White Flower Farm are beautiful and informative.

And a pleasurable way to learn about gardening in your area is to visit beautiful gardens. How about the San Francisco Botanical Garden? Their site is:

I visited San Francisco many years ago and remember it as a beautiful city. I didn’t have a chance to stop at the Botanical Garden, but nothing would keep me away from it now.

Happy Gardening!

Can I use vermicompost as an Aquarium fertilizer, If yes then how to use it?

Hi,
I am reading the chemical and biological properties of vermicompost, and found that it contains all macro and micro nutrients. So can I use vermicompost as a Aquarium fertilizer? If yes, then how to use it. The chemical and biological composition of vermicompost is as follows
Chemical composition –
pH 6.5-7.5
Organic Carbon % 20.43 – 30.31
Nitrogen % 1.80 – 2.05
Phosphorus % 1.32 – 1.93
Potassium % 1.28 – 1.50
Carbon : Nitrogen 14-15 : 1
Calcium % 3.0 – 4.5
Magnesium % 0.4 – 0.7
Sodium % 0.02 – 0.30
Sulphur % Traces to 0.40
Iron % 0.3 – 0.7
Zinc % 0.028 – 0.036
Manganese % Traces to 0.40
Copper % 0.0027 – 0.0123
Boron % 0.0034 – 0.0075
Aluminium % Traces to 0.071
Cobalt, Molybdenum Present in available form

Biological composition –
Total bacter count of 2.5 ´ 106 comprising of Azotobacter, PGPR, PSB, Actinomycetes. Also contains Gibberalline, Auxins & Cyctokinine in sufficient quantities.

That would be fine, just make sure you have a layer of either sand or gravel covering it– this will ensure that your tank doesn’t turn into a cesspool of mulch, nutrients, and other things you don’t necessarily want jammed in your filter. If you could find a fertilizer lower in nitrogen and phosphorus, it would be better, but the current stuff will work fine. I currently have essentially the same setup in my 10 gallon tank, and the plants love it!

EDIT: You can get potting soil like the kind the asker mentioned for about $5 and have enough to cover a 55 gallon tank, while it would cost upwards of $40 to do the same with something like Eco Complete or Florite, which aren’t even that easy to find and are poor choices for plants with delicate root systems (like Cryptocorynes).

fertilizer costs
how much liquid starter fertilizer do you apply per acre when seeding? how much is this about in cost?

look at my other question earlier, noone had an answer for me?

Depends on what product it is and the concentration of the ingredients. Not all liquid ferts are the same. You’ll need to get the product and look at the label. All chems registered with the EPA will have this info as well as mixing instructions and safety instructions. As far as the cost goes, you will know this if you decide to purchase the product…
